I finally feel like we’re moving forward! We are currently in the process of forming a working agreement with Mission Alive for an extended period of discernment for church planting. We are still hammering out the final details but it will take place from June 2009 through August 2010. During that time we will participate in Mission Alive labs, retreats, forums, and other events. We will have three main goals for this period of discernment:
- Ongoing spiritual health and renewal – as we have a season where we can be intentional and focused on plunging ourselves deeper into the life of God, why not? Right? Practically speaking, this will probably mean Amy and I will form an intentional relationship with a spiritual director/mentor of sorts to help us draw close to God on a personal level.
- Development of church planting disciplines – we will be join an existing Mission Alive church plant to stay in a church planting context. I will spend 3-4 focused seasons during this time on several areas of church planting that I want to grow in. Expect another post outlining some of this to come.
- Discernment of future ministry – we trust that during this time God will make it clear to us what direction he is leading us for ministry. If that is church planting (as I suspect at the moment), then we hope to discern a location, a co-worker, and partnering/supporting churches for the next church plant
Once we get the final details hammered out with Mission Alive and our potential church plant for the residency, we will start a season of fundraising. At this point it looks like I will probably look for a part time job as well. This seems to be the direction that many of the Mission Alive church planters are heading and it will ease the burden of fundraising furing this time. I’m ready to get going!
