Discerning a Vision for Church Planting

From now until the end of April is a season where we will be discerning a vision for church planting.  Our plan is to step away from our involvement with Riverwalk come May and begin officially working to make new disciples who will become new churches here in Wichita.  I have been spending a lot of time recently planning and preparing for this discernment process and have identified and begun working on four major tasks to aid in our discernment.  I’ll describe the four tasks below.

Developing a rule of life

A rule of life is an intentional set of spiritual practices that help provide structure for a lifestyle of following Jesus.  As we have gotten settled into Wichita, we are now asking ourselves how we will go about living the way of Jesus consistently.  We hope to answer questions like,

  • How and how often will we be praying, reading scripture, and listen to God’s voice?
  • How will we regularly be connected with unchurched and disconnected people in our community?
  • How can we regularly be working for justice in Wichita?
  • How will we be sharing our life of faith with other people?

Our hope is to settle on some good practices and rhythms that make sense in Wichita which can easily be passed on to new disciples.

Continue Connecting with Riverwalk

We continue to value our partnership with the Riverwalk Church of Christ.  The dream of church planting here originated with this congregation.  We value their compassion for people, insight into the city, and attentiveness to the leading of the Spirit.  We will continue to meet with the congregation in their Sunday assemblies, participate in several of their Life Groups, and serve with them as they help people around downtown.

Plant Team Formation

Part of our dream for this church planting was to have co-workers come alongside and work with us.  We have been in conversation with potential partners for quite sometime and hope to announce their commitment soon.  We still have a couple more things to work out.  But should all things more forward as we hope, we expect to spend part of this season praying and planning with them as they begin their transition to Wichita. We also see our continued fundraising as part of this task.

Cultural Analysis

Cultural analysis is an intentional study of life and community here in Wichita.  We’ll look into Wichita’s history as well as its current events and demographics.  We’ll look for community events to observe and participate in as well as interviews with current Wichita residents.  We are especially looking for a sense of how God has been at work in the city and what He is up to today.

We believe that God is already at work here.  We see it already in the Riverwalk Church and expect to find Him in other people and places as well.  We trust that as we live out our rule of life, continue our connection with Rivewalk, pray and dream with teammates, and study Wichita’s culture that we will find God and discern His vision for church planting here.  Please keep us in your prayers as we listen to Him.  May we have the eyes to see the vision He has for His church here in Wichita.

Good planning, Micah. These are good tasks.

  2. I am thankful for your thoughtfulness and planning. May God lead you forward in developing and living out this way of life. May it spread to others as you walk with them. We are praying for co-workers as well.

    Grace and peace,

It has been wonderful seeing and feeling God’s prescense in our church family with your family and your lessons in class. I hate that I will miss your message from the pulpit this Sunday. But it was great to hear of the Mott’s joining you. Just from the short time in meeting them I feel very hopeful in their and your ability along with both of your familys’ love for our Lord. My prayers are with you all.
